A New Hope Approach....
The Prison System:
The current prison system is expensive, and it produces more crime. New Hope Initiative aims to address this problem by implementing a system that takes a human approach. We believe that character rehabilitation should be the primary focus of the prison system. The goal of New Hope Initiative is to take an unproductive member of society and teach them to take responsibility, to work through issues in a healthy way, and to become independent assets to their communities.
It is impossible to empower a human being to change for the better when they are locked away and treated like caged animals. It is impossible to instill independence when we cage a person for 10-20 years in an environment where their entire existence is based on dependence. We tell them what to eat, when to eat, what to wear, when to get up, when to shower, and every other instruction for their lives. This system does not produce a man or woman that is equipped to stand on his or her own two feet once released. We believe that structure is important, but structure can exist in a way that promotes transformation and independence. By educating and empowering prisoners during their incarceration, the transition back into society should be much easier and the chances of falling back into the same criminal behavior should be drastically less.
The Transitional Housing System:
Many prisoners come to prison from living situations where drugs and crime are prevalent. One of the leading causes of recidivism is the fact that under the current system, prisoners are housed for the entire duration of their sentence and then dumped back into the same environments that produced their criminality in the first place.
